Ethanol Poisoning in Children
Duchess of Kent's Military Hospital Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire DL9 4DF
Over a two-year period seven children were seen with acute ethanol poisoning. The features and incidence of such poisonings are reviewed, and the reasons for young children drinking alcoholic beverages are considered.
It is important to think of ethanol as a possible cause of poisoning in an unrousable or floppy infant, particulary between the ages of two and four. With the risks from hypoglycaemia such cases should be treated in hospital with facilities for monitoring blood glucose as well as blood ethanol.
Although in the past not a common cause of childhood poisoning with the increased availability of ethanol in the home it is possible that many cases will be seen.
