This annual award is made to a young European scientist for significant scientific contribution to biomedical research on alcoholism. Congratulations to Dr Lorenzo Leggio, Institute of Internal Medicine, Catholic University of Rome, Italy, currently studying at Brown University, USA. He received the 2008 Award on 26 September at a lively and well-attended meeting in Cagliari, Sardinia, organized by Dr Giancarlo Colombo and colleagues.

The authors who submit to this Alcohol and Alcoholism are, together with our reviewers, the people who sustain the success of this journal. We are pleased to announce to them that, after many years of our requesting that in their list of references they quote the names of journals in full, we are moving in 2009 to a modified Harvard system, where abbreviations of journal names will be permitted. The website instructions for authors are now updated to reflect this.

We have limited space, and try to keep a balance which meets the interests of a wide readership, from molecular through to global matters. We receive submissions of high quality and regret that we must disappoint some authors. This is hard for the editors as well as those authors. Charles Darwin wrote a letter on Dec 24 1866 to Benjamin Walsh (on hearing that Walsh had become editor of Practical Entomologist): "I am rather sorry that you are Editor, as I have always heard that an Editor's life is one of ceaseless trouble and anxiety".

For papers accepted, we are pleased to say that advance online publication is running at about 4 weeks from the receipt of proofs checked by the authors.

As many of you will also know, Alcohol and Alcoholism has an optional open access policy whereby an article is made freely available to all upon online publication. Furthermore, the journal is fully compliant with the National Institute of Health (NIH) Public Access policy with all NIH-funded articles being automatically deposited in PubMed Central. Full details about the journal's self-archiving policy and open access options can be found via the journal homepage.

Free online access to the readers in developing countries is available through our Developing Countries Online Collection Offer (see website).

Online usage continues to grow steadily and during this year the journal has been receiving approximately 60,000 full-text download requests per month.

Members of the Medical Council on Alcohol who wish to subscribe to the journal will be able to opt for a reduced price for online access only from 2009. From 2009, the membership fee for ESBRA will include free, full online access for all members.

2009 will begin with a highly authoritative special issue on alcohol and brain damage. In the meantime, we thank all readers, authors, reviewers, our administrator Anne D'Hauwer and Oxford University Press for their continuing support.

Good wishes,
