Book Review
Alcohol Awareness Manual. By Gaylin Tudhope
; Gaylin Tudhope. Alcohol Awareness Manual. Haynes Publishing, 2006. Hardback, £14.99. ISBN: 1 84425 2957.Haynes Publishing produce workshop manuals for hundreds of cars and motorcycles round the world. They specialize in helping people carry out DIY maintenance and repairs. They follow the format with this drinker's manual, which describes the hazards of excessive drinking, and covers many chapters from turning over a new leaf to intensive treatment programmes. The author, who is a psychotherapist, describes her interest as Autogenic Therapy.
There is a great deal of accurate fact and good common sense, although the patient severely affected with alcohol dependence as treated in health service clinics, would find this only a beginners guidebook.
The strength of this book would be its relevance for people with earlier drinking problems. I can see it being useful in school libraries, at Alcohol Advice Agencies and in Public Libraries.
It is copiously illustrated and well laid out, with many sub-headings and bullet points. It is a large hardback manual, compared with the usual self-help books for this sort of problem, but deserves to be widely available.
