VALEDICTORY MESSAGE

E. Bruce Ritson, Chairman MCA, MD FRCPsych FRCP(Ed) and Guy Ratcliffe, Executive Director, MSc MB FRCP

As Dr Abdulla Badawy stands down as our Chief Editor it is essential to formally acknowledge the vast amount of work that he has personally undertaken on behalf of Alcohol and Alcoholism.

Having been Deputy Editor for several years, he inherited the appointment of Chief Editor in 1994 and thus he will complete virtually a decade in this demanding role. He has worked consistently hard with determination and zeal to enhance the name of the Journal and has seen it rise to its present position. He has fostered closer relationships with our colleagues in ESBRA, not least with their Chief Editors. His efforts were publicly acknowledged by the ESBRA President at their recent meeting in Prague. Similar sentiments were expressed on behalf of Professor Gian Luigi Gessa, the present ESBRA Chief Editor, who is also standing down in the near future. We also acknowledge Professor Gessa's efforts over the last two years.

To our new Chief Editors, Dr Jonathan Chick and Professor Philippe De Witte, we offer a warm welcome and the best of good fortune for a happy and successful partnership.

To Dr Badawy, and not forgetting his team in Cardiff, we wish the best of good fortune in the future and our grateful thanks for a job well done.
