A double-blind study of the effects of 100% oxygen and medical air on the alcohol withdrawal state (AWS) showed no significant difference between the two conditions using a random sample of 50 subjects in each treatment group. However, both gases produced a therapeutic effect in over half the cases in each group. These results could be related to the possible opioid properties of the placebo response.
