MEASURING THE SIDE-EFFECTS OF PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS: A PHARMACODYNAMIC PROFILE OF ALPRAZOLAM

IAN HINDMARCH

Human Psychopharmacology Research Unit, University of Leeds Leeds LS2 9JT, U.K.

Received 16 June 1983; An assessment has been made of the actions of the psychotropic drug alprazolam and of its possible interaction with alcohol, using a variety of psycho(pharmaco-)logical test systems designed to examine sensory, motor and other central nervous system functions in addition to giving subjects impressions of drug actions and side-effects. The merits and validity of these tests will be discussed and the simplicity of assessing psychomotor function for investigating drug-alcohol interactions is illustrated.
