OPIATES, NEUROHYPOPHYSEAL HORMONES AND WATER BALANCE
Department of Anatomy, The Medical School, University of Bristol Bristol BS8 ITD, U.K.
Received 29 April 1983; Opiates may affect water balance by influencing the release of the neurohypophyseal hormones vasopressin and oxytocin. This influence has been given an anatomical basis by the discovery of an abundance of opiate receptors and opioid peptides in close proximity to magnocellular neurones containing either vasopressin or oxytocin. It is generally believed that opiates cause an antidiuresis by promoting the release of antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin). However, in our laboratories, using a variety of experimental appraoches, we have invariably found that opiates and opioid peptides suppress the release of neurohypophyseal hormones. This view is supported by recent clinical findings.
